Home of the University of Washington, the skyline is dominated by 22 story UW Tower and the Art Deco Hotel Deca. The main business area called “the Ave” has long been in decline and has a large homeless population known as the Ave Rats as well as gang related violence.

It lies along the Lake Washington Ship Canal across from Eastlake and Montlake. East of it lies Windermere while to the west is Fremont.
